MENG History

As an informal group, MENG was founded in 1995 by a group of colleagues at a Connecticut outplacement firm.  This small group provided each other support in assessing various career opportunities. Most in this group focused on the Consumer Packaged Goods industry.  The primary goal of the group was to share job leads and help each other obtain an appropriate position. In-person meetings were held very three weeks and attendees were expected to share at least three viable job leads with the others.

As members shared information, they created strong ties with each other.  Soon the group was sharing more than job leads.  They began identifying the value of sharing their respective networks and they became more knowledgeable about marketplace issues, interview challenges, and professional strategies and tactics.

  • By the late 1990s, the group had grown to over 80 members.  In 1999, the group established its first electronic tool and members began sharing information through a Yahoo Groups email list.  As the group deployed virtual tools, membership expanded beyond the Connecticut area.
  • By 2000, over 100 members existed and the group had representation from many northeast states.
  • In 2001 MENG hired its first outside chairperson, built its first website, and expanded its base of operation to two other national markets.  By the end of 2001, MENG had 8 local chapters and over 400 members.
  • In 2002 MENG added 3 new local chapters and the membership climbed to near 1,000.
  • In 2003, the organization, the demands for more resources forced us to move away from Yahoo Groups and we introduced our own virtual networking solution.
  • In 2005 MENG decided to outsource its web and mail operations, to more efficiently serve our rapidly growing membership, allowing us to focus our financial and people resources more directly on our members.  The Kavi Corporation was chosen as MENG's application service provider, and our redesigned site went live in August 2005.
  • In 2006 MENG membership topped 1500 for the first time.

Today MENG membership is nearing 2000 members, offers over 25 different email lists and discussion board forums, has new Special Interest Groups, offers Career Maximization webinars, hosts Business School Webinars with professors from the leading Business Schools in the country, boasts key alliances with other organizations, appeals to all areas of marketing, and has plans for many more features and benefits.  Our regional chapters hold local meetings each month and members may attend to hear presentations that enhance their professional skills.  MENG has evolved into one of the best and most sought after marketing associations.  Compared to only a few years ago, only 11% of our members are in transition and most members remain active once they land.
