Richard Sellers, MENG Chairman of the Board

Richard Sellers, Chairman of MENG, has been Sr. VP of Marketing of 3 multi-billion dollar corporations:

·    Service Merchandise, a database-driven retailer with 400 stores,

·    WellPoint, the largest health insurance company, and

·    Career Education, a for-profit post-secondary education company which owns 85 colleges educating nearly 100,000 full-time students.

He was hired by each of these companies to help rapidly increase sales and profit by: A. Installing marketing as a new core competency; and B.  Upgrading their marketing department’s effectiveness.

At Service Merchandise, he helped launch one of the first large ecommerce catalogues in 1996 of 4,000 SKU’s and was the 3rd largest customer of the USPS producing more than 750 million catalogues and other sales materials yearly.

Using a combination of organic growth and acquisition, WellPoint (Blue Cross of CA, BCBS if MO & GA, and UNICARE at the time) sales increased from $6 Billion to $17 Billion during Richard’s 6-year tenure, during which he was promoted twice. He expended considerable effort consolidating their previously disjointed web presence and co-chairing developing the company’s ebusiness-strategy. His department also lead breakthrough customer research that directly resulted in improved customer satisfaction, won a Gold Effie for effective advertising, and increased brand strength. He’s proud that his department ranked #1 company-wide for employee satisfaction and motivation.

At Career Education, which doubled sales during his 3-plus years, he was responsible for producing several million  “qualified” leads yearly as well as the sales support/CRM/training/call centers to turn leads into paying students. He was fortunate to see students graduate and begin better lives.

After beginning his career at General Electric in Advertising & Public Relations, he earned multiple promotions at Procter & Gamble (Brand Manager), Marketing Corporation of America (Executive VP of the Ally & Gargano Advertising division &  Consultant), and Playtex Family Products (VP Marketing, US, & General Manager, Canada).

He also has worked twice as an independent consultant. Richard was associate partner of the EMMGroup bringing Marketing IP and best practice process to large CPG companies including Gillette and Kimberly-Clark.

Currently, he runs Demand Marketing, a name which reflects Richard’s belief that marketing’s core role is to create demand as well as a subtle reminder that companies must demand that their marketing departments increase sales and profits. Most of his focus is in health, education, Internet, and not-for-profit categories.

Richard received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri.
